About us

Our company, which today trades under the name of Esslinger Verlag J. F. Schreiber GmbH and belongs to the Klett-Group, can look back on a long history. It was founded in 1831 and soon educationally valuable publications like illustrated sheets, nature books and artistically arranged picture books were the main emphasis of the programme. The publishing house is still today committed to the high-quality picture book. But the titles of the new publications are no longer called "Only for good Children", as at the end of the 19th century – nowadays the young readers prefer to identify themselves with cheeky protagonists like the Little Raven or Bea Backbord.

As well as for modern picture books, however, the Esslinger is also well-known for its reprints: from the huge collection of J. F. Schreiber and since 1997 the Alfred Hahn’s Verlag, historical best-sellers like Sibylle von Olfers’ The Root Children, the three dimensional pop-up books by Lothar Meggendorfer and The Rabbit School have been published once more.

A wide range of non-book articles complement the books.

In addition to that, Esslinger organizes important international co-productions – in this way the stories of the Little Raven have been translated into about 20 languages.
