Anastassija Archipowa
Anastassija Archipowa was born in 1955 in Moscow and studied at the W.J.Surikov Arts-Institute. She began her career as a poster designer, winning critical acclaim in poster contests in the Soviet Union and abroad. In the mid-seventies Archipowa, a Moscow resident, turned to illustrating Shakespeare, Cervantes, Molière and Goethe, as well as fairy-tales by Russian and foreigm writers.
Archipowa’s world is a place of beauty and harmony. Having done much illustrating of classics, she tries to avoid offering her own interpretations of the text, seeking instead to help readers penetrate the book’s true spirit. This requires a thorough study of the material world of the period in question. Archipowa succeds in giving an exceptionally accurate rendering of material objects, be they the protagonist’s attire, hairstyle, hand gun, architecture, interior, table ware, or the heroine’s jewellery.
Her hallmarks are immaculate draftwmanship, threedimensional representation, and attention to lighting, She espouses the theory that every illustration should tell a story. In other words, events and characters ought to be portrayed as having real-life prototpyes.
Since 1985 Anastassja Archipowa established contacts to the Esslinger J.F. Schreiber Publishing House. Meantime she illustrated several fairy-tales for the Esslinger Publications.
Anastassija Archipova lives and works in Moskow in a country cottage in the bosom of her family. Her illustrations have been exhibited all over the world.
